Last October, we were all glad that our city, Malaga, had been elected European Capital of Smart Tourism 2020.
The city was the only Spanish that opted for this title granted by the European Commission to distinguish the destinations that have opted to innovate in the sustainability of tourism development. It competed with another 35 cities in 17 EU states.
The candidates that most impressed the jury were Gothenburg and Malaga, mainly for the impressive programs of activities they intend to carry out during this 2020 and for their ability to serve as a model for other cities.
The mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre, defended the use of new intelligence tools in marketing and Big Data. He also highlighted the road traveled by the city to also advance in a sustainable development that allows implementing strategies that benefit citizens in their day-to-day life and the experience in the destination of tourists coming to Malaga.
We highlight the following projects agreed within this framework: The extension of the ‘Victoria la Malagueña’ chatbot, the creation of an intelligent tourism business accelerator focused on virtual and augmented reality projects, gamification and new technologies. Also, a special edition of the Málaga Pass tourist card and the celebration of an international hackathon for European startups on smart tourism.
