Archaeological remains of Phoenician Malaga

The archaeological excavation carried out in the old building of the Casa de Correos y Telégrafos de Málaga more than two decades ago, as part of the rehabilitation work necessary for its use as the headquarters of the Rectorate of the University, revealed levels from the Phoenician era.

Researchers from the University of Malaga have recently carried out a review of materials corresponding to the deepest levels of this excavation, revealing that the origins of Phoenician Malaga were prior to the 600 BC century, -data accepted so far- so they trace the Malaka’s founding chronology in the middle of the 7th century BC

“Along with the Phoenician pottery we have found fragments of a Greek amphora, since the Phoenicians imported oil from the central Mediterranean. This finding reaffirms our adjustment of the chronology ”, clarifies José Suarez, professor of the area of ​​Prehistory at the UMA.

And it is that, along with historical data, with this study, relevant information on gastronomic traditions of the time has also been obtained. “A clear example is a handmade pot that we have found. In the Phoenician world, normally, the pots were made around, which shows us that they incorporated into their community people from contemporary autochthonous populations, in particular, women, who were those who in this period were more linked to domestic activities «, it states. According to the researcher, gastronomy is one of the traditions that is best maintained over time, so following the trace of the kitchen is a good formula to identify the hybridization of communities.
